Nickey’s Egg Donation Story

Why do women decide to become egg donors? And how does the process unfold? Egg Helpers continues its series of interviews with our donors to share stories from women just like you. Women who decided to take a leap of faith, change someone's life forever, and make their dreams come true. This is Nickey's story.

I first came across Egg Helpers from an ad on Facebook, which led to me researching about egg donation in general and reading up on the company.

Deciding to become a donor was easy. My older brothers are my biggest inspiration. My oldest brother and his wife suffered years of fertility issues and pregnancy loss. My other brother is in a same-sex relationship, and they will need the assistance of an egg donor if and when they decide to have a child. I'm also a bit of an impulsive person, and once I saw how amazing egg donation was, I couldn't think of a single reason why donating would be a bad idea.

I decided to go forward with a known donation. A few days before my retrieval date, Egg Helpers put me in touch with the Intended Parents via email. From there, we added each other on Instagram and chatted a little. They seem like wonderful people and I got to see some pictures of their beautiful family. The love they both have for their two children was so immediately obvious, so I knew my eggs were in good hands.

I took the entire donation process day-by-day with very few expectations. I had trust that I was in good hands and I brought my mother along with me for good measure, as she’s a retired Registered Nurse with over thirty years of experience. I was so glad she was with me throughout the egg donation process, as there was no way I could’ve given myself all those needles without her.

My body responded very well to the medications. I didn’t get any of the side effects that I was warned could happen. Towards the end of the medications, my body started to experience symptoms that were very similar to my own period. I was a bit tired, and experienced some nausea and a tender midsection, but that was all very manageable.

When my retrieval day finally came, I was beyond excited. But I had also never spent this much time away from my three children before and I was getting a little homesick. Other than that, the staff was great, and everything was thoroughly explained to me.

When I woke up in the recovery room, I was surprised that I was sat in a chair instead of laying down. Initially, the nurse seemed to be in a hurry to get me up and moving around so I could leave the clinic, but I don’t respond well to conscious sedation and I was quite nauseated. They encouraged me to stand but then immediately set me back down when they saw how quickly the colour drained from my face. It took about 3 1/2 hours before I was able to leave. Even then, it was a very quick window to get me into a cab and back to the hotel before I got sick again. I spent the rest of the day in bed, lightly snacking until the nausea subsided. By that evening, I was feeling much better.

My retrieval was on April 8th, 2019 so it’ll be some time before my eggs become people. But I’m very hopeful and excited to see how this journey plays out!
